Dominion Mining Limited (ASX: DOM) has officially rejoined the ranks of Australian gold producers with the first production of gold from its 100% owned Challenger Gold Project in South Australia.
"Our first gold bar was poured on (the day after Friday), 12 October during the commissioning process," Mr Alexander said.
"A second bar was poured on Thursday, 17 October, and the first shipment of gold bullion, expected to total 750 ounces, is scheduled for Thursday, 24 October," he said.
Mr Alexander said the commencement of gold production at Challenger, which is located 740 kilometres north-west of Adelaide, was a significant milestone for Dominion - signalling the Group's return to the ranks of Australian gold producers after an absence of 7 years.
"We are very pleased to have successfully completed and launched the Challenger Project on schedule and within the $17.8 million development budget - a tribute to the commitment and focus of our very dedicated team," he said.
Ramp-up to full production levels is expected to be achieved by the end of October 2002. At full production, the crushing plant at Challenger is capable of operating at rates of up to 140 tonnes per hour while the CIP circuit is capable of operating at 50 tonnes per hour for oxide ore and 35 tonnes per hour for higher grade primary ore.
The Challenger Project has provided 75 permanent on-site jobs and represents a significant new mining project for South Australia.
The initial open pit will recover 105,000 ounces of gold over a 20-month operating period from start-up in October 2002, at an operating cash cost of approximately A$278 per ounce. Head grades are expected to average 5.9 g/t.
