You know I was thinking the exact same thing today.

All this negative publicity ultimately paints a gloomy picture for Lynas.

This could really come back to bite us in the ass...

I've been looking deeper at the short sales data for this questionable period.

1. Kuantan High Court denied the application for an injuction on 8-Nov, prices jumped to 81 cents. Gross shorts drop from the previous day to $3,677,435.00.

2. Trading Halt followed by Institutional Placement + SSP was announced on 09-Nov, 0 Volume was traded this day.

3. Successful completion of institutional placement bookbuild announcement released on Monday 12-Nov. Gross shorts hit $6,429,369.00 for the day. Share price drops 9 cents to 72 cents.

4. On Tuesday 13-Nov, the market adds another $9,011,767 in short sales for the day to hit total gross short sales of $15,441,136.00 for the day. SP closes 7 cents lower at 65 cents

This shows that the large gross short sales increase happened on 13-Nov, an entire trading day AFTER the initial 9 cents drop on 12-Nov and AFTER successful completion of the Institutional Placement Bookbuild on 12-Nov.

The $3,677,435.00 short sales that took place on 08-Nov during this 5 minute window is nothing compared to the $15,441,136.00 shorted on 13-Nov or even the $4,234,331.00 shorted the previous day 07-Nov-12. In fact, $3,677,435.00 in gross short sales for that day is probably around the daily average for Oct-Nov.

I wouldn't be surprised if this investigation doesn't make it far at all, and I'm afraid the repercussions of this bad publicity will be a greater detriment than the shorting that took place...
