PhatProfit - the price can be higher when the stock goes back to the lender so shorters don't often win. Most of them would have lost over the past 5 years, if 2008 was excluded. The owner of the stock would have also received interest and commission as well. If a shorter's position is going pearshaped enough, they will close out their positions.
