The Australian arm of Merrill Lynch said today it had acquired a 7.39 per cent stake in real estate group Lend Lease and would soon lodge a substantial shareholder notice.
In a filing to the Australian Stock Exchange, Merrill Lynch said 3.14 per cent of the stake consisted of borrowed shares that had been on-lent. The securities firm didn't say on whose behalf it had acquired the shares.
Lend Lease last Wednesday failed in its bid to take over General Property Trust. Its shares, which had been forecast to drop, have risen 3.7 per cent since Wednesday, prompting speculation that it may itself be the target of a takeover bid.
