"PUBS will become largely cash-free under a radical plan by the Australian Hotels Association to counter the spate of armed robberies in Sydney hotels.

The AHA is negotiating with credit card giant American Express to develop a system, including lifting the surcharge on card usage.

The association is also working with technology company Banktech Group to develop a "cashless gaming terminal" which would allow patrons to play poker machines without cash"

"Banktech Group has a new product before the Liquor Administration Board of NSW which will create a so-called "cashless gaming terminal".

Under the "ticket in, ticket out" system they are developing, gamblers would be issued with a ticket from an ATM-style machine with a nominal amount on it to play the poker machines. Any wins would also be redeemed from a self-service terminal."
