yep - peak sunshine solar plants without batteries are in serious trouble... a single daily discharge battery on each site would help, but that article does a great job of highlighting the difficulties that renewable generators are presented with when trying to get their power onto the grid.
The new wind turbines may be able to be progressively rolled out over existing sites (as many of our sites are in prime wind resource locations.. once existing plant becomes end of life. As you mentioned though - these new turbines (and poles) are huge in comparison to existing plant and may not be approved to be installed in all locations - plus additional engineering would be required to allow installation. Capacity of the power lines currently installed may not be able to handle the additional output (but batteries could help here!).
IFN do currently have a few solar projects listed to them in planning phase in QLD alone - I seriously doubt that any of them will ever go past planning though - but as I mentioned earlier... I do feel that solar can have a co-location benefit to a wind farm with a decent battery setup.
I may not sound as battery nuttish as Ash - but I do feel that any renewable project that commences from 2020 forward should have a battery... and I would not mind if they were bigger than the Lake Bonney set up
