Further to the above, I would be surprised if overall the average (that's a dangerous term) SMSF didn't perform above the 'average' public-offer fund. Largely because many Trustees DO take an interest and are more active in decisions and aim for more shorter-term returns, which sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Also plus there is a different mix of assets so comparisons are useless, just like Industry Fund Balance Funds are usually quite different to most others.

My point is that changing to a SMSF isn't on it's own going to improve returns. ANY super fund needs to be looked at at least occasionally and informed decisions made, even under advice, the member needs to understand the potential risks and rewards.
