I use Morningstar for an overview https://www.morningstar.com.au/ETFs/PerformanceTable ( I signed up but only for free bits) and then narrow it down to a few that may suit my portfolio then narrow it down be researching those a bit more using the fund managers website (historical returns, management expense ratio etc). I also like the LIC pages on Morningstar.
I sleep better knowing I have a sensible portfolio with stop losses I control and I enjoy the occasional semi speculative stock with high return potential (although this is strictly limited to 5% of total per annum!)
Since I started self managing I have been much more inclined to salary sacrifice to super, there is no way would have given any more than I had to to AMP who I always suspected were after the highest return for themselves rather than for me!
