I've come to the conclusion I need $400k before starting an SMSF.
I figure you've got to build in the worst case, which heaven forbid would be a divorce, where the wife gets half of our combined Super.
If you say she builds up to $100k, and I have built up to $400k, then that would leave me with a $250k half share, enough to deal with a worst case scenario and not have to close the fund due to a low balance.
I had looked at Esuperfund as an option. Doesn't rely on paying a Financial Planner taking a % per year on top of fund costs, and allows you to invest in shares however you like.
Downside of Esuperfund is that they tend to have one size fits all, self serve model, and you can't do things outside of shares without a bit of pain.
However, I am not looking for Property, Art work etc. so would probably work out OK.
Lets see how I go. Hopefully I reach my $400k target before too long, and stay married ;-)
