think of it like paying back $68, not 68mil shares, and all the different ways you can pay that back. You borrow from a bank, from your Mum, use a credit card, write an IOU, extend the loan at new terms, rob a chemist, juggle on the street, get another loan to pay this loan.....
There are endless options for the shorters to cover (buy back) the shares they have sold and square up the ledger. If they make or lose money, it's theirs! All they have to do is ultimately give back exactly the same amount of shares they sold (effectively borrowed) in the first place.
All of the above is written with simple analogies in mind.
