BrainChip Partners withProphesee Optimizing Computer Vision AI Performance and Efficiency

    Jun20, 2022

BrainChipand Prophesee announced a technology partnership that delivers next-generationplatforms for OEMs looking to integrate event-based vision systems with highlevels of AI performance coupled with ultra-low power technologies.

    Propheseecombines with Sony

Prophesee has gained market traction with keypartners around the world who are incorporating its technology intosophisticated vision systems for uses cases in smartphones, AR/VR headsets, factory automation and maintenance, science and health research. Its partnershipwith Sony has resulted in a next generation HD vision sensor that combinesSony’s CMOS image sensor technology with Prophesee’s unique event-basedMetavision® sensing technology.

Prophesee’s approach to enabling machines to see isa fundamental shift from traditional camera methods and aligns directly withthe increasing need for more efficient ways to capture and process the dramaticincrease in the volume of video input. By utilizing neuromorphic techniques tomimic the way that human brain and eye work, Prophesee’s event-based Metavisiontechnology significantly reduces the amount of data needed to captureinformation. Among the benefits of the sensor and AI technology are ultra-lowlatency, robustness to challenging lighting conditions, energy efficiency, andlow data rate. This makes it well-suited for a broad range of applications inindustrial automation, IoT, consumer electronics that require real-time videodata analysis while operating under demanding power consumption, size andlighting requirements.

    Sony and Propheseecollaboration

These two sensors weremade possible through a collaboration between Sony and Prophesee, by combiningSony's CMOS image sensor technology with Prophesee's event-based method visionsensing technology.
As part of the collaboration between Sony and Prophesee on these products,
Metavision® Intelligence Suite an event signal processing software optimized for sensor performance, is available from Prophesee. Combining Sony’s event-based vision sensors with this software will enable efficient application development and provide solutions for various use cases.

    Partnershipbetween Qualcomm and Sony

When itannounced its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobileplatform, Qualcomm also revealed it was entering a partnership with Sony SemiconductorSolutions to work alongside one another inside Qualcomm’s San Diegoheadquarters. Now, a year later, Qualcomm has shared the first fruits of itslabor with Sony Semiconductor Solutions. Although the exact details of itsimplementation aren't clear yet, Qualcomm says its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 sensorwill support a new Quad Exposure technology that will make the most of newQuad-Exposure Digital Overlap (QDOL) sensors from Sony, which should allow foreven greater dynamic range.

Accordingto Heape, these sensors (which we presume will be in forthcoming flagshipdevices) will be able to output four images at different gain levels at oncefrom a single sensor, which can then be combined to form a single HDR image.Sony Semiconductor Solutions has had sensors capable of outputting two or threegain levels at once, but this will mark the first time four simultaneousexposures can be captured and processed.
