As of this morning from 1st May the existing 21GW installed Diversified Solar & Wind with suggested storage (in my opinion) could not match the output of the Victorian Brown coal generators (4.7GW installed) over this period.Technically there may also be an issue with depleted storage.
Combination of Winter conditions including shorter days for Solar plus large high pressure systems for covering the whole NEM at times results in extremely low generation at night when it is cold.
It would be interesting to see how the LCOE models and renewable industry have or are able to reflect these conditions in the costings and future risk analysis for energy security.
