The riser is the pipe that rises from the sea floor to the drillship. The drill string is lowered down through this pipe. This riser will have flexible sections at the top and bottom to compensate for movement of the drillship. The conductor pipe is basically the well head that they set in the seafloor and accepts the drill string when lowered into the well bore.
