The theory behind underground coal gasification is not new.

County-Durham’s Nobel Laureate Sir William Ramsay carried out the first experiments in the technology around the turn of the 20th century. Work was halted by the First World War - and it’s only because of modern directional drilling techniques that Five Quarter’s technology has become economically viable.

Now Five Quarter could bring the technology full circle.

“Nobody knows who will be at the forefront, there’s a bit of jockeying for position,” added Dr Roddy.

“Australia is already underway - but we’ve got better ideas.
