According to both a newspaper in Jordan and Beirut television, thousands of Israelis working at the World Trade Center had the day off when the buildings were destroyed.

Israeli media began mourning the loss of 4,000 Israeli lives in the World Trade Center attack but ceased on learning that only a relatively few showed up, according to Beirut's Al-Manar Tele vision.
"Arab diplomatic sources revealed to the Jor danian al-Watan newspaper that those Israelis remained absent that day based on hints from the Israeli General Security Apparatus, the Shabak, a fact which evoked unannounced suspicions by American officials who wanted to know how the Israeli government learned about the incident before it occurred and the reasons why it refrained from passing on to the U.S. authorities the information it had," the station said.
"Suspicions increased further after the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahranot revealed that the Shabak had prevented Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon from traveling to New York and particularly to the city's eastern coast," the station said.
According to Lucas Brenowitz, a spokesman at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, one Israeli citizen was confirmed killed in the World Trade Center and three more are still missing.
