both my parents were geologists (my father a generalised set of skills with a focus on microzoning (geological stability, and carbon dating having been instrumental in setting up the first international carbon dating conference with a nuclear science expert). His friends included volcanologists, soil scientists, geophysicists, hydrologists and geomorphologists. Each of them knew geology in general but their deep knowledge did not overlap
