PERTH (miningweekly.com) - ASX-listed Gindalbie Metals on Monday reported that it had produced around 342 000 t of hematite direct shipping ore (DSO) from its Karara South, Karara East and Blue Hills North deposits during the quarter ended September.

Gindalbie was currently developing the Karara iron-ore project, in Western Australia, in a joint venture with China’s Ansteel. The project would consist of a smaller-scale hematite operation along with a substantial magnetite concentrate operation that would produce around 30-million tons a year, for more than 35 years.

At the end of the three months to September, Gindalbie had spent around A$1.6-billion on the project development, of the A$2.57-billion construction estimate.

Trial mining at the Karara South and Karara East operations was completed during September, and the two orebodies allowed for the simultaneous prestripping of the magnetite orebody.

Gindalbie said that mining operations at the Blue Hills North deposit also began in July this year, and commissioning of the crushing plant began in September.

The miner said that 113 000 t of fines and 52 000 t of lump was railed from the Tiley Siding to the Geraldton Port, while a further 10 000 t of fines were trucked to Geraldton Port. There were ten combined shipments with Sinosteel Midwest Corporation, with 173 000 t of lump and fines loaded during the quarter.

The lump and fines product that was mined, but not shipped, was stockpiled throughout the supply chain, allowing for continuity of supply through the remainder of the year.
