Those are the legal niceties. Unfortunately, the reality is that the politically naive voters to a large extent elect the the leader of the party. Why else was the country flooded with the "Kevin 07" message? I would bet that most of the Labor voters did not even know the names of their candidates until they reached the ballot box.
