Because solar has only just reached the point where it is competitive with coal and gas.
Because wind only reached that point a decade or two ago.
Because it takes time to build this stuff.
And because initial builds were based on subsidies to help wind and solar get to economies of sale and technical maturity.
It will take us decades to build all the wind, solar and other renewables to build a fully renewables grid. Since wind became competitive we've moved to something like 15% wind on grids around the world, in a couple of decades.
So who is doing this stuff today? Everyone, all over the globe. But the process of change is just beginning.
