Why will that " massive storage " double cost the of energy ? Post the costings please .
Why do you need 3 lots of duplication ?
Do you realise how much overcapacity we have in the existing system so that we have enough power for 2 or 3 peaks per year ? And so those plants can shut down for maintenance ? Do you know how long large coal fired power stations shut down for at a time for a boiler service or a turnaround ? Months sometimes . How's that for efficiency ?
50% renewables ? Fossil generators are going to shutdown progressively . Liddell in about 2022 . Yallourn about 2029 . Loy Yang 2040 or later and so on .
Currently domestic rooftop solar is being installed at about 1.5 gw per year and rising . That is almost the size of Hazelwood . Pretty soon those domestic installations will also include batteries . That will result in a huge shave of the morning and afternoon peaks . And that's just domestic .
Commercial renewables are going in at a larger rate than renewables .
So , by the time these generators start retiring , renewables plus storage will be there to take over .
Huge web of transmission lines ? Have you heard of the national grid ?
Sheesh .
