"Cairns was hit without warning on the back of the head. He collapsed to the pavement and was assisted by fellow players and four armed security guards who have been shadowing the team through Africa on their world cup campaign. As they left the club some of the players were abused by members of a crowd which demanded to know if they were New Zealanders. Cairns was hit and although felled, but suffered only a cut lip. A scuffle developed as team-mates rushed to Cairns' aid. "It was pretty tense. We were told to get out of there – we went," said New Zealand Press Association journalist Mark Geenty, who escaped with the players in the two cars.
