Not quite true.
In times of adversity, people seem to concentrate on more "spiritual" values.
Emphasis on family, community, etc. seems to prevail in these situations.
I acknowledge that capitalism is a positive driving force, but all such mechanisms require some form of periodic correction.
We all know wealth makes happiness easier but other factors are necessary.
