Merrill Lynch, a fully owned subsidiary of BoA are the ones doing the buying on behalf of the latter and are then legally owned by them, refer to recent substantial holder anns.
Now just which clients BoA choose to distribute them too through their various global wealth management activities is, as you say, "anyone's guess".
That imo is not as inconsequential as your post insinuates as the main goal when investing and managing clients money is to pick worthwhile stocks.
