"Meditation" is one of those words that can mean anything from a genuine heightened self awareness to a drug-like self induced hypnotic sleep.

Likewise, "self awareness' is also subject to a wide range of meaning and experience.
For example many people .. especially in the West, equate self awareness with what their intellect is thinking about themselves.
"Many of the Eastern philosophies" would find that limited view quite curious.

I suspect as you get old enough and closer to shedding your Earthly coil, you may have a different attitude and will not be so keen on shedding it ! This BTW is regardless of one's views on an "afterlife".
