I was watching a documentary about the life of bees, and part of the documentary discussed the life of the males. The worker bees are all female whereas the male bees do not have a stinger and stay around the hive doing very little until they are needed to compete to fertilize the next passing queen bee on her nuptial flight.

"The queen bee flies off and the male's reproductive system gets ripped out of his body. Not surprisingly, the male bee loses interest in living and quickly dies. The queen bee then uses it to fertilize her eggs for the next few years.'
