The joke reminds me of another one that highlights the fact that even though there are so many good things about something or someone, do something bad and that thing subsumes the otherwise good reputation. The soccer dudes who take a dive in order to get a false penalty or feign injury for a slight tap are what are specifically remembered by those who don't like soccer or don't follow it.

Those people are large in number, so they take pleasure in 'putting the boot in' knowing that they will get plenty of 'likes'. A lot of modern comedy is like that. You see good examples here on HC. Pick on a minority group - eg children concerned about their future in a warming earth, so called 'lefties', 'greens' and so on. They are easy targets and the author knows that that there will be plenty of support. I call them 'groupies'.
