Following on from my post of 5 September, I have turned up an excellent news release from the IMB titled socking it to cancer. Published on the 2 August 2006, it helps to fill in some of the blank spaces and at the same time highlights the opportunities presented by the Sox18 project.
“A key advantage of using Sox18 in treating cancer would be that it is very, very specific in its role, unlike chemotherapy which has such broad side-effects," said Professor Koopman.
One of the challenges identified by Koopman was the need to develop a method for delivering a drug directly to the Sox18 gene in the middle of the cell. After a decade long wait, the IMB team must be very excited to begin the Targeting the Undruggable project. Stopping tumours in their track by turning off a master switch could revolutionise cancer therapy by providing a safe alternative to chemotherapy treatments.
