    Hi NewEconomy,
Tesla (former name Tesla Motors) are not moving away from Panasonic. They are actually forming a closer collaboration. The Gigafactory is a two company venture. Panasonic is responsible for manufacturing the new generation technology 2170 battery cells, and Tesla is responsible for assembling the battery cells into battery packs for stationary storage and motor vehicle applications. The Powerwall 2 and Powerpack 2 are the first products Tesla is producing in the Gigafactory.

I think you are correct that LG Chem is the current Australian market leader: They had a market share of 30% in the first half of 2016 and considering they launched a new product range in October they likely ended the year with an increased share of the market.

However, Tesla are about to seriously challenge them, as one on one, the new Powerwall 2 product is technically superior to any other battery currently available. At AUD$8000 for 13.5 Kwh, the Powerwall 2 is serious competition. Considering LG Chem's RESU 10 is 8.7Kwh and sells for between AUD$8222.50 they must reduce the price when the Powerwall 2 becomes available. They are going to have to drop the price to around AUD$5100 and include an inverter to compete on a like for like Kwh hour basis. I notice that they have already joined with an inverter manufacturer, Sunny Boy, to offer a battery and inverter bundle.

The good news for LG Chem is that their new RESU range is most likely produced using the same technology as the cells they are supplying to GM for the Chevrolet Bolt.

If so, they will be able to sell the RESU 10 as low as AUD$2700 and still make a profit. 2017 has the potential to push the cost of battery storage in Australia down to a price that will result in widespread residential, commercial and grid scale adoption.
