What I find strange is Australia is loaded with Gas, we have loads of it, why can't we be using it.
Obviously Australia does burn gas for industrial use, power generation and residential use.
Many of our newer gas fired generators have been constructed so that they can switch on and off relatively quickly to respond to changes in electricity demand.
Unlike some of the older kettle type gas burners that might find themselves paying to stay connected to the grid at those times of the day or year when spot prices go negative.
As a fuel source gas has become more expensive than it used to be when it was a by-product of oil well drilling.
Quite a few years ago Asian investors provided a lot of the capital to establish a liquefied gas export business in Australia.
Because we ship the gas overseas at prices which can be tied to the price of oil our domestic gas prices have also been tied to the world gas price so we pay more for our own gas.
The Japanese jump up and down at any attempts to restrict their supply of gas.
Generally our gas fired generators on the national energy market turn off in the daytime when the sun is shining, ramp up in the late afternoon when the sun goes down and then ramp down as people go to bed, ramp up in the morning when people put the kettle on before turning off again when the solar panels fire up. Sometimes one or two might be directed to stay fired up in the daytime to help maintain grid frequency which they get paid for.
