Here is my understanding from info gleaned many years ago.
The second part of the claim in the Equipment catalogue records the correct commercial arrangement as all special rights for 'Pioneer Licecees' were withdrawn well over 10 years ago. In any case the old patents (1989 to 1996) that refer to DSC are virtually useless now. EPFL grants licence rights to licencees where EPFL is the owner of the IP. Some of the research by EPFL since about 1996 has been commercially driven under contract to third parties, particulalry Japanese and Korean. There is also only limited 'respect' in the R&D industry for the 'power' of an EPFL lience as EPFL does not defend its rights unless the defence is funded by a licencee - so licence fees are not often paid and some companies use the EPFL IP without negotiating rights. The advantage of a licence today may be in contracting in EU and particularly Switzerland for government funding.
Would be happy to hear any other comments based on recent correspondence with EPFL et al.
