You would have to imagine that just about everything in those times was discovered by accident? Even then it would depend on the person involved appreciating what had happened, it's potenial, being able to repeat it and then sharing that information.

I'm sure it was. The Hittites got lucky. They used charcoal, only way to get it hot enough, and even then it wouldn't melt it. Much hammering charcoal into and out of the iron to make wrought iron for swords, wheel rims, plough shares etc.
Likewise I bet copper smelting (which stripped the ME of its forests for fuel - first concrete proof of man's destructive tendencies for industrialisation) was accidental too, along with glass, alcohol etc. etc.
It was only when we got rid of alchemists that a semblance of deliberate discoveries started to be made, IMO.

What things except perhaps Lasers and transistors were a theory before the fact?
But then there's the wheel... Did someone imagine it before making one?
