They might be beneficial some days I suppose but I think I will concentrate on keeping the hot air out.

I might try one of those green walls that you can get off of one Western facing wall down the bedroom wing.

The best house in summer I ever owned was a really old sandstone place with return verandah and grape vines.
Only trouble was how dark it was inside.

The lack of cool air is indeed a problem. I have turned on upstairs ceiling air con but not much belief this will work as no ceiling vent in stairwell. Your sandstone house cold in winter though?
