I read that SYD are limited currently to 80 aircraft movements per hour. An airline analyst has commented that if more movements per hour, plus a decrease in curfew hours were instigated, SYD would not require upgrading, or a second airport constructed. Apparently 60% of noise complaints are received from just four people on an ongoing basis. Current airliners are 25% quieter than the old Jumbo. Airlines are now using a landing technique that allows them to glide from their cruising height of say 35,000 feet, off throttle, all the way to the runway. This has come about through fine tuning of computer systems and allows them to now be closer to 40% quieter upon landing. Should increase operating hours be legislated, SYD will be even more appealing from my point of view.
