An Open letter to Mr Twiglette
Dear Mr Twiglette,
Me and 32,000 mates own a medium sized commercial vehicle repair business in WA; were mostly known for lower en d Korean and Chinese vehicles, but have been making efforts to diversify and get a share of the European vehicle market. I’ll be honest, it’s been tough for a long time, but we have battled through the worst of it and paid off most of our debt. We have a well trained and motivated workforce and most people say it’s a great place to work.
We got our management to develop and implement a Diversification Strategy and things were beginning to look up at the beginning of the year; our workshops were heaving and we got enquiries which would bring down costs and produce extra revenue. Then all of a sudden business tailed off and when things were really quiet our management team got a crazy low takeover bid from a large conglomerate. We had expected them to knock it back, but for some reason they accepted and are now tied up in legal knots. They won’t even talk to us anymore - and we own the company!
The owner of the conglomerate hates us. He started off calling us idiots on life support, and recently used his industry mouthpiece to call us dreamers and tell the markets that we are dying on our feet. Apparently this is legal – but is it right?
Mr Twiglette, I can assure you that us owners are realists – we know what we have and we have realistic expectations of what can be achieved in the future if the whole team pulls together. We have spoken in the past and you even have a small stake in our company.
We are writing to you because we know you care about Western Australia and you care about your investors; we are not looking for charity and we don’t need it. We think it’s great what you’re doing for WA Water Polo after it was shunned by the Eastern States – it’s not everybody’s’ sport but a lot of people do care about it and that’s what matters.
We have to stand up for each other at these times; our business is sound but it needs some stardust, we’d really appreciate any advice you can offer on how best to move forward. Happy to talk any time.
