Just doing a bit of reading up on Jiangxi Copper's activities in South America.

In 2007, Jiangxi Copper and China Minmetals (40%/60%) bought out TSX-listed Northern Peru Copper for C$455m to secure its Peruvian Galeno copper-gold-molybdenum project.

While we are fixated on BHP, there are several Chinese entities with the capacity and desire to acquire copper assets of Cascabel's size in South America. Individually or jointly.

My guess is Jiangxi has been encouraged to rope in one or more of their fellow state-owned enterprises to make an offer for Cascabel, or stand to make a quick buck (by drawing BHP into the fray) if they don't manage to secure it.

Not sure if the Chinese want a block cave though, they rather like huge technically uncomplicated land scarring open pits.

But everything has a price, I just wonder what the minimum price for Cascabel might look like.
