The other thing is SC's 30c if that was said. Is an opening price an invitation to treat. He wants a bidding war. He knows Mather is behind him.
One of my favourite tactics in shopping is, my wife does the taking and appears to be the one they're negotiating with. When they've made most of their objections and concessions the sellers find out I'm the decision-maker. I might even have appeared to not speak their language or understand if it's O/S. I don't mind being taken for a stupid foreigner because one of the two of us is and the emphasis isn't on a foreigner.
Bait and switch (although not precisely that here) is not limited to all the BS merchants.
All IMVHO.
