Solid Energy reveals
Denniston interest
by Lee Scanlon
"Solid Energy has revealed it?s looking into future
mining at Denniston and at possibly collaborating
with Bathurst Resources on infrastructure.
Bathurst is currently seeking resource consent for
its own Denniston mine proposal.
Solid Energy chief executive Don Elder has
revealed the two companies might collaborate on
infrastructure and transport.
He said Solid Energy was drilling several prospects
on the Denniston plateau. ?For us, it is far
too early to say what that means? But we do have
several prospects at Denniston we may be able to
develop, if not jointly with Bathurst then at least in
co-operation with Bathurst - around the boundaries,
using common infrastructure.
?That coal, certainly, can share the infrastructure
down to the coal loading point.?
Future prospects at the south end of Solid
Energy?s Stockton licence might also use Denniston
infrastructure, he said.
Solid Energy was also looking at what rail
capacity it could offer Bathurst to transport coal to
Lyttelton.
Bathurst expects to produce about 2 million
tonnes a year. The Buller District Council is hoping
the company will export its coal directly through
Westport port.
However, Dr Elder said more spending by Kiwi
Rail, Lyttelton Port and Solid Energy could increase
the current rail capacity, depending on the volume of
coal available.
Solid Energy anticipated it could provide about
500,000 tonnes capacity to Bathurst in the nearterm.
He emphasised no plans for Denniston infrastructure
or extra rail capacity were included in the current
year?s planning ?and they?re not even probably
in the next two to four years of planning?."
