Cobalt is NOT a rare earth by definition, although yes it is a rare element. Different if you understand the two. http://www.australianminesatlas.gov.au/aimr/commodity/rare_earths.html#Rare_earths Cobalt is not one of the 17 Elements that are classified as Rare Earths
Rare-earth elements are cerium (Ce), dysprosium (Dy), erbium (Er), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), holmium (Ho), lanthanum (La), lutetium (Lu), neodymium (Nd), praseodymium (Pr), promethium (Pm), samarium (Sm), scandium (Sc), terbium (Tb), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb) and yttrium (Y).
