Hi-tech conservationists keeping a close eye on developers

    MAROONDAH LEADER NOVEMBER 22, 2014

TECH-SAVVY conservationists are using satellite imagery to keep watch on illegal tree damage by developers.

Croydon Conservation Society has signed up to online service nearmap, a mapping tool that delivers high-resolution aerial imagery on a regular basis.

Society president Liz Sanzaro said the service allowed them to compare maps of Maroondah at different times to monitor tree loss and damage.

“We can see recent removals and check that against the council’s documents that show what permits have been granted for tree removal,” she said.

Ms Sanzaro said the tool had already proved useful in identifying tree damage and the society was in the process of compiling evidence to send to Maroondah City Council.

“We’re aware of a couple of situations where we believe that some sort of tampering has occurred that has caused trees to become unwell through severe pruning or damage to the underground roots,” she said.

“Our society started as a tree preservation society and it has been our primary focus is to keep our area clean, green and treed.

“We believe developments can be done in a way that allows trees to remain untouched.”
