With the growing trend towards a 4 day week and working from home in the tech sector (and other industries) the obvious conclusion is to rezone/convert an appropriate % of office buildings in the CBD's to residential. This will not only revive said CBD's and the businesses that rely on foot traffic but will also add to the availability of rental and ownership accommodation. It's clear to see that the days of centralized business districts are a dying dynamic as the world evolves and the city infrastructure is conducive to residential living for many with little building conversion required by developers and councils. And yes, it won't solve the continuing supply deficit, but it will help to negate the rampant suburban expansion, which requires even more infrastructure to accommodate said expansion and threatens viable agricultural land at a rapid pace, particularly along the coastal regions of arable land; food supply and ease of distribution being more important than the luxury of a sizable backyard in a fast growing population IMO.
