The problem with building power plants in far isolation is the massive costs of transferring the power to the cities. The cabling would end up costing more then the actual plant itself. Solar and wind generators are favourites amongst greenies, and I really wish we could rely totally on these systems. They are however, currently not cost effective per kilowatt of power and are only good while we have sun and wind. The horrible truth is that the world's power consumption needs is sky rocketing with the introduction of plasma TVs, larger homes, increasing population and the rapid growth of electrical dependence within China's and India's communities. There really is no real solution to it all, except reduction in both the world's population and the individual's insatiable appetite for electrical power. But like all of us here, I'm not prepared to give up anything that I'm already used to.
The good news is that there's an Australian company that's created a solar cell that's about 10 times more efficient than the existing cells. It would be nice to think that we could ultimately have these cells on our homes to supply a good percentage of our power needs, such as air conditioning and refrigeration during the days.
