    Late 1979 to late 1983 was employed at the UNSW Swimming centre ( completed in late 79 ) . It had/ has solar heating installed on the roof of the building ( innovative for the time ) which we couldn’t get to operate simply . In collaboration with the engineering department ( very helpful ) a few tweaks later and all was good . difficult to ascertain the effectiveness in taking the load off the gas burner though , as I think switching the system on was manual .. anyway we were pumping water through the solar system .
    Later ( probably summer of 1982 and all of 83 ) research fellows from the uni added a table / bench and seats to the plant room and on occasions brought their computers and analysing equipment . Electronic analysing equipment was in its infancy in those days , for commercial scale swimming centers , chemical dosing etc remember asking how effective the system was .
    reply was the system needs enclosing to maximise effectiveness .
    little did I know at the time but maybe this was the beginning
    left the uni in late 1983 and went to the institute of sport in Canberra , swimming centre , which also had a solar system installed
    thats another story
    1987 the first Darwin to Adelaide solar challenge commenced which I think from memory the UNSW was involved with
