A few thoughts, by about two years the resource to the immediate north will be proved up and it looks like about ? as much again of the same. That will be one huge area deposit. Then there is a major cobalt squeeze developing with the demand for nicad batteries, especially for laptops and mob phones and electric hybrid cars. Wingellina plus could produce up to 7000 tonnes pa (from the two deposits) and cobalt is now over $120,000 tonne. Could easily hit 200K but this is conjecture at this stage. $1-$2bln pa cobalt alone? Could gas be piped in from the Cooper Basin? Then there is that geothermal energy for power gen in northern SA. The mix is not complex, just two metals, in an iron clay on the surface. No rocks to break up apart from the limestone to neutralise the acid after use. Low overburden-mining a cynch. Sulphur possibly from Compass at Batchelor NT or sulphide mines WA?
Due to the low magnesium and alumina content will need less acid than a lot and may be lower temperature as well as a result. This could mean less complex plant. But yes it will take more than a few years. But if the Chinese want that cobalt for electronics badly enough they may well pull the stops out building plant and shipping it in?
But yes, it takes time to make a mine. A lot of investors dont want a big wait just now, but it looks like there will be big resource increase announcements and some real action on the price front. And that WA phosphate. Thats awild card, and big demand at high prices. But yeah, that will take time too.... but if youve seen the chart they produced in none of the reports showing where W fitted in on the scale diagram for world deposits, size and grade, W will quite possibly, with the northern deposits added be one of, if not the, biggest nickel deposit/mine anywhere. If the grade is adjusted for cobalt credits at the price area cobalt seems headed it will move well up the grade scale too. When you have deposits that big with metals in as much demand as nickel and cobalt, its not just talking a few Oz punters. It will be in the full global mining spotlights. A sort of mine that people like BHP, Rio, RioDoce, Xstrata, Anglo etc, all want a piece of, or all of. Thats a much bigger ballgame price wise. But it will need water. 1 million tons pa min, but recycling possible/ Artesian basin? Work to do. It will also need a lot of cold drinks for the personnel. Maybe thats where I come in.
