There's a great scene in Shakespeare's play Hamlet where the eponymous character is watching a play with his mother, the Queen, whom he suspects has conspired to kill his father in order to further seize power.
The play within a play that they are watching is a poorly hidden copy of Hamlet's own situation and, after watching the "Queen" character provide too much detail and too many excuses regarding her behaviour, Hamlet turns to his mother and asks her what she thinks of the "Queen". Her reply:
"The lady doth protest too much, methinks"
Something to think about.
