If it is done solely to reduce the shares on issue it can hurt the share holders in my experience. Because you lose liquidity and the traders dry up, anyone wanting out gets stuck and it puts downward pressure on the share price.
However if it is done correctly as part of an acquisition or something big and exciting then it can be a good thing and the share price continues to appreciate.
Greg has been very clear about if there is to be a consolidation, it will be part of an acquisition or something that will add value. He will not do it just to reduce shares on issue as he knows it can hurt share holders.
If it is done solely to reduce the shares on issue it can hurt...
