In answer to your question....briefly, institutions might place a few large sell orders a few points above the current price so that new sellers who wish to trade today have to come in under their price to be hit. In the meantime the institution places buy orders at the desired level slightly below their sell orders to mop up the retail sellers. they therfore accumulate stock without pushing up the price.
This only works where the insto is left alone to trade a stock that is generally lightly traded. ROC is a good example. It wouldn't work with a bellwether like BHP. I should add that I have no experience working in a fund manager's or broker office, so my knowledge has been learned from the market and I could be wrong.
