    BTE3 is to test the boundary, so could be 12km from BTE2. Found nothing with BTE3 and decided to halve the distance - "binary search technique". Therefore, BTE5 is half way between BTE2 and BTE3.

    Could be:

    BTE2 to BTE3 = 12km
    BTE2 to BTE5 = 6km
    BTE3 to BTE5 = 6km.
