Donman, I really don't know what you are on about. The cost to an individual or insurance company for a bone-marrow transplant is the region of $400,000 with a 6 month recovery period.
If you look at Provenge for an example. It was also an individualised medicine that required apherisis. It cost $93,000 for each treatment and was covered by Medicare, despite the fact that it didn't prevent progression or give better quality of life, or even work for that matter. It was approved on the results of one study that showed a 4 month survival benefit.
I guess that initially, Cal-1 would be approximately $200,000 and Medicare would be obliged to pay for it, because that is the way the system works.
The estimated individual lifetime costs of treating HIV are $US380,000 in the US. Seems like pretty good value to me when it means that they may be cured, and cannot infect others.
