    I'll have a go at a quick explanation that others can expand on, if they like. The gas can be produced, if there is enough of it to justify the considerable expense of bringing it ashore and building a gas terminal. Not likely in our case. However, the gas is very useful for powering all the equipment on the FPSO, it can also be reinjected to maintaining reservoir pressure or used as gas lift to lighten the oil, if necessary, or in secondary or tertiary recovery in later life of the field. (There are probably other uses as well.)

    An appraisal well could become a producer, depending on how it was designed and completed, but an exploration well probably not, however, both types of wells could potentially be used for other purposes, eg logging or pressure monitoring during production or shut-in.
