While I agree with the use of Charts as a guide to share price action, I think the "Volume" traded may have been simp;y caused by meaningful releases to ASX...
Note the following ann's:

01/09/2008 - "KIK WilbossDrillrig in Transit.."
08/09/2008 - "Yakal-1 Spuds"
12/09/2008 - "Galoc Operations on Track"
These ann's correspomd with the significant dates you have mentioned.
